What do you see?

The ability to observe a subject closely, to see what is truely there and not what you think is there, and then to find a way to reproduce that observation onto paper… Drawing from observation is the basis for so much art making, from painting to printmaking, realism and even abstract art making.

Discover the skills…

This initial block of six sessions will leave absolute beginners with the ability to continue to draw with confidence. Every session is carefully crafted to help you to learn how an artist observes a subject, then uses an understanding of shape, line, and tone to translate their observations onto paper.

Drawing for life!

It is recommended that attendees continue to practise the skills learned between sessions. Any paper and pencil can be used for practise, however a sketching set (A5 sketch book, pencils, eraser, and sharpener) can be included for an additional small fee. All materials for in-studio sessions are provided.

(Pack provided may not look exactly like the one shown, but will contain similar, good quality materials)

  • Begin the course with a simple drawing from observation, then explore the different marks that can be made with a pencil.

  • Investigate drawing cube shapes, including making straight (ish!) lines, and using shading to suggest 3D form.

  • Expand on drawing cubes and cuboids, by exploring the curves of cylinders. Discover and develop techniques that help a shape appear rounded.

  • Explore spherical shapes, and begin to find ways to differentiate between textures.

  • Discover how to break down complex subjects into basic shapes to aid drawing.

  • Practise the drawing of repeated shapes effectively.

Look back at your original drawing, and see how far you have advanced in your skills!
