About Me

I create paintings that peer into the life and activity of the natural world, inspired by the movement and community of birds: their flight, their lives, their interactions within the cycle of seasons. I want to capture the feeling of standing beneath a murmuration of starlings, and reveal a glimpse into a usually hidden world where wrens scurry below green branches. My work reflects everyday glimpses of wildlife in an environment ruled by seasonal changes.

I want to reveal a glimpse into a usually hidden world where wrens scurry below green branches.

After completing my degree in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University, I became a primary school teacher, and then a parent. Finding time and energy to make art was hard, and for many years I thought this was a part of my life that had passed and gone.

Then, whilst my boys and I explored forest school, I felt the urge to draw again. Beginning with fitting nature journalling into home education for my boys and myself, I slowly began to make art again.

Now based on the border of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, I am able to prioritise time for creating, and also help others in their creative journeys.

I am fascinated by the ways watercolour paint can be manipulated, but also how it’s unpredictability can lead my painting in new directions. Glints of metallic inks capture the glimmer of sunlight, the sparkle of raindrops or the shimmer of wings.

My use of watercolour paint reflects the emotional connection I feel with the activities of birds. Aggressive splatters surround fighting sparrows; soft blooms express the haze of a summer’s sky;  random splashes like raindrops speckle the page. I work in layers that reflect the layers of life and activity going on all around us in the natural world, beginning with large marks expressing the space I find my subject in, and reducing to fine, delicate lines evocative of the fragility of these tiny lives.
